GORROPU: A Natural Monument Waiting to Be Discovered

Discover the magic of the Gorropu Gorge, a natural jewel in the heart of Sardinia where wild beauty meets deep-rooted history. Spanning a length of one and a half kilometres, this breathtaking canyon forms the natural border between the striking landscapes of Barbagia and Ogliastra. Rainwater flowing from the majestic foothills of Gennargentu gathers into the Flumineddu River, carving a torrent through the Supramonte massif. Eons of water erosion have shaped Gorropu into one of Europe’s deepest and most extraordinary canyons.

Gorropu is not merely a masterwork of geology, but a genuine haven for biodiversity. Visitors can encounter unique endemic species, such as Aquilegia nuragica—one of the world’s rarest herbaceous plants—and the Sardinian brook salamander (euproctus), Europe’s rarest amphibian, which inhabits the clear pools of the Flumineddu River. The wildlife is equally remarkable: mouflons roam freely across the heights, while golden eagles nest high within the canyon walls. Frame by the ancient Supramonte range, the gorge exudes an atmosphere of wild enchantment.

Yet Gorropu is also a place steeped in captivating folklore. Oral tradition speaks of Sa Mama de Gorropu (The Mother of Gorropu), a fearsome creature said to haunt the canyon. The Sos drullios are described as malevolent spirits that emerge during tempestuous nights to sweep away people, livestock, and structures across the Supramonte. Legend also has it that Sa Tentassione (the Devil) resides within Gorropu, and that many once ventured here to incumandare (pledge) their souls in exchange for earthly riches—only to succumb to despair. It is also a known phenomenon for winds within the gorge to reach astonishing speeds, powerful enough to cast flocks of birds against the sheer cliff faces.

To embark on this unforgettable adventure, the trail begins near Dorgali at S’Abba Arva Bridge. The path stretches for roughly 6 km along the foot of Monte Oddeu’s towering cliffs 🏞️, with the Flumineddu River flowing gently alongside 💧. Immersed in dense Mediterranean scrub 🌿 and shaded by holm oaks and aromatic flora, the route is mostly flat and accessible, though you should prepare for a few thrilling rocky sections on the final approach to the canyon entrance.

Upon reaching the entrance of the majestic Gorropu Gorge, you will be left spellbound by sheer rock faces rising over 500 metres high, tapering in places to just 4 metres in width. This is a place where nature speaks and legends come alive—an experience that will stay with you forever.
